Solar Schools
Renfrew County's Catholic schools are going green!

s

This photo-voltaic solar array is installed on the roof of Bishop Smith CHS in Pembroke. Environmentally friendly, this array will produce 10 kW of electric power under full sunlight. Power produced by this system connects to the grid in the school's electric room.

The maximum power output for our system is 10,000 Watts.  This solar array will produce maximum energy from April to September when the days are long and the sun moves higher in the sky.

During the winter months, December to February,  this output is limited by the low sun angle and short periods of daylight.

The cells and modules used in this array come from the Ontario based company, Arise Technologies located in Waterloo.

Bishop Smith CHS is part of a province wide research project, the Green Schools Pilot Initiative. This project is Funded by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Research and Innovation. The project involves 10 other schools spread across Ontario.  All schools involved are installing 10 kW systems, each unique in design and location.  Data about power production from each school will be available on the Internet allowing analysis and comparison of each system.

Paul Charbonneau, Project Director, has put together a
Solar 101 Map showing the locations of all the schools involved in this project.
