Build a Clinometer

Clinometers can be used to estimate the height of tall objects, like trees and buildings and can also be used to determine your latitude.
This clinometer is designed to determine the height of objects at a distance of 20 meters from the base of the object.

Using a Clinometer

Step 1

Cut 4 pieces of wood as shown above.

Step 2

Drill 3/16" holes as shown.

Step 3

Assemble as shown.
Use a wing nut to attach the Pendulum Arm.

Step 4

Draw a line across the Scale Arm along the edge of the Pendulum Arm

Step 5

Remove the scale arm then carefully measure and draw a line along its center.
With a ruler make marks at the following intervals starting from the pendulum line:

5 cm, 8.5 cm, 11.3 cm, 13.4 cm, 15.1 cm, 16.4 cm, 17.7 cm, 19.6 cm, 23.4 cm

Step 6

Mark the scale:

0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 50, 100

The units are meters.

Note the scale is irregular. This is to allow for the crowding (numbers get tight together)
that occurs at the upper end of the scale.
